Letur Lefr John Frusciante
Born in 1970 and raised in California, Frusciante dropped out of high school when guitar playing and rock music took hold of the up-and-coming musician/songwriter. Embracing both the unpredictable side of rock (, ) and punk (, ), Frusciante created his own guitar style - combining both technical skill with a knack for penning funky, psychedelic riffs. Became an automatic favorite when the young guitarist discovered them early in their career, and his dream to join the band came true in 1988 after striking up a friendship with ' bassist (in the wake of founding guitarist Hillel Slovak's death from a drug overdose). Interestingly, Frusciante had just been hired by another L.A. Band, prior to joining. Frusciante's first recording with them, 1989's Mother's Milk, helped break the popular college rock band through to the mainstream, resulting in their first gold record, with Frusciante's amazing guitar playing serving as a catalyst for many of the songs.
The quartet released an even rawer record next: 1991's Blood Sugar Sex Magik, produced. The album catapulted the band into the rock stratosphere as it became a multi-platinum hit and made one of the premier bands of the '90s. But all was not well in Pepperland.
Frusciante found it increasingly difficult to handle his newly found fame, and retreated into a haze of hard drugs and unpredictable behavior. At the height of Blood Sugar's success, he abruptly left the band while on tour in Japan. Besides releasing two obscure solo albums (1995's Niandra Lades & Usually Just a T-Shirt and 1997's Smile from the Streets You Hold), little was heard from Frusciante after his split from in 1992. Then a disturbing article appeared in the L.A. Weekly, one that painted Frusciante as a heroin abuser with a death wish (the interviewer was also shocked at his ghastly appearance). Thankfully, with the advice of friends, Frusciante checked himself into a rehab center and got off drugs, stopping his path to certain destruction. Just a few months after getting his life back on track and facing the world again, he got back in contact with the rest of his ex- mates (he regularly kept in contact with ), whose then-current guitarist, had just split from the band.
After a loose jam session was deemed a success (as well as a psychological evaluation!), Frusciante was asked to rejoin the band. The newly kindled relationship was a rousing success, as the reunited issued the great Californication in 1999 to rave reviews and big sales. Two years later, and with drugs a thing of the past, Frusciante emerged a tough singer/songwriter by releasing a solo effort entitled To Record Only Water for Ten Days.
Merely a creative outlet from his band's original material, Frusciante appeared motivated and relaxed as an individual and free from the deception of drugs that had haunted him before. In 2004, he released an astounding six solo albums as well as a project with (who appears on several of those six albums) and 's called. He also collaborated extensively with, playing guitar on several of their albums. Then duty called once again, and Frusciante did some work with before releasing a follow-up to the album in early 2007.
Psychedelic concept album The Empyrean arrived in 2009, after which Frusciante left yet again. He continued to work with, in addition to releasing collaborative albums with the group's leader. In 2010, Frusciante teamed up with Aaron Funk and Chris McDonald (SKM-ETR) to form an acid techno group called Speed Dealer Moms. The trio released a self-titled EP through Funk's imprint. Were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, but Frusciante declined to attend the ceremony. In 2012, two wildly different solo albums showed up in the form of an EP called Letur-Lefr and a full-length called PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone.
These two recordings were dizzying affairs that reflected Frusciante's life-long dream to make electronic music. The records employed acid house bass synthesizers, sampled jungle drum breaks, and even had cameos from MCs like 's. The 2013 EP Outsides took yet another odd turn, offering up a ten-minute piece based solely around an extensive blues-based guitar solo and a few other abstract tunes. 2014 saw the release of synth-heavy full-length Enclosure, a somewhat daunting electronic record, but tame by Frusciante's then-recent standards. In 2015, Frusciante issued a self-titled album under his acid techno alias, which had previously released a free online EP in 2012. Frusciante released Foregrow, an EP of electronic music recorded under his own name, on Record Store Day in April of 2016.

Review Summary: The creative machine shows no signs of slowing.In the same way that misery searches for company, stagnation searches for John Frusciante. The only difference being that the latter have never met. Producing no less than four albums in 2004 and numerous others before and since, you can’t help but get the feeling that there isn’t a day in the life of John Frusciante where an idea isn’t spawned, experimented with, or recorded. His last heavy foray into electronic music; 2001’s ‘To Record Only Water for Ten Days’, was a triumph. Consisting primarily of simple synthesiser beats infused with mellow guitar fills and instrumentals, it was a genre spanning experiment which showed his vision and drive to keep evolving. Advertised as the precursor to full length album ‘PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone’, ‘Letur-Lefr’ continues Frusciante’s trend of evolving and experimenting, and adopts a sound that the man himself describes as ‘Progressive Synth Pop’.By his own admission, John Frusciante has spent a lot of time over the past five years broadening his horizons and honing in on genres that he’s previously explored but “had no idea how to execute”. With ‘Letur-Lefr’, he finally combines genres in a way he had hoped to for so long, and he’s having a great time in the process.
Album artwork is often ambiguous, but the carefree finger painted style mirrors the delight he expresses at being able to “to focus exclusively on music for music’s sake”. ‘Letur-Lefr’ was built with enjoyment at its core, and it shows.Although the contribution of guitar work on ‘Letur-Lefr’ is minimalistic, it still plays a vital role. Rather than driving the songs forward, it stays in the background and serves to add layers to the songs, most notably on opening track ‘In Your Eyes’. The gorgeous rippling undertones it provides are not only a welcome reminder that this is not a complete departure from Frusciante’s signature sound, but also help to compliment and accentuate the effectiveness of the synth beats. The most powerful and memorable moments on the record can be attributed to the combination of vocals (be it rapped, sang, or yelled), and bright synth beats. ‘909 Day’ features vocal samples and rapping, but it’s the upbeat tune and almost angelic vocals that see the song out that make it a highlight. A similar effect is felt in closing track ‘In My Light’, where a combination of rough Frusciante yells are juxtaposed with a peaceful fading outro that brings the EP to a fitting close.The biggest disappointment with ‘Letur-Lefr’ is arguably the biggest compliment you could pay it too, it feels too short.
A second instrumental to compliment ‘Glowe’, or another experimental track in the ilk of ‘909 Day’ would certainly have been welcome. Thankfully however, Frusciante seems keen to run with his new electronic obsession for much longer, as full length ‘PBX Funicular Intaglio Zone’ is likely to go hand in hand with this release. With ‘Letur-Lefr’, John Frusciante wholeheartedly embraces the fruits of his labours after a lengthy learning curve into the world of synth and electronic music, and whets our appetite with an excellent Extended Play.
